Amazon launches new game engine called Lumberyard

Amazon has launched a new game engine called Lumberyard. [official site]

"Amazon Lumberyard is a free AAA game engine deeply integrated with AWS and Twitch – with full source code provided. Whether you are a major studio, an indie developer, a student, or a hobbyist, Lumberyard provides a growing set of tools to create the highest-quality games, connect your games to the vast compute and storage of the AWS Cloud, and engage fans on Twitch."

While Mac/Linux support is not yet available, it will be coming "soon." From the FAQ:

Lumberyard currently supports PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Mobile support for iOS and Android devices is coming soon, along with additional support for Mac and Linux.

There are a lot of viable options for game creators right now, mostly in the form of Unity and Unreal Engine 3 & 4. It will be interesting to see what game devs do with Lumberyard, and if it will have any ripple effects towards the current kings of game engines. And when Mac support is available, if anyone will make use of it. Whatever the case, more options for game devs usually means more games, which can only be a good thing.
